Rabbi Alon Meltzer
Born in 1988, in Auckland, New Zealand, I have been involved in the Auckland Hebrew Congregation and wider Jewish community since I was a young child.
It has been my goal to be involved in all areas of the Jewish community - reaching across the age, religious, political and ideological spectrum in order to gain personal connections with all those whom I come in contact with. Working with adult and youth educational institutions, synagogues, schools, and youth movements, have been instrumental in shaping the Rabbi that I want to be. The main focus has been to create inclusive and engaging community wherever I may be – specifically by opening our home for orchim guests–those who we know as well as travellers, those in need, or those from our community who we do not yet know.
I am currently the Rabbi of Or Chadash Synagogue in Bondi, Sydney, and the Director of Programs at Shalom, a Sydney based not for profit with a mission to increase Jewish life and learning in the Sydney Jewish Community through dynamic, innovative and inclusive programming.
I completed my BA, BA (HONS) and MA in Sociology at the University of Auckland, was ordained at Yeshiva University's Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, and completed an MA in Medieval Jewish History at Bernard Revel Graduate School. I am pursuing a Doctorate of Philosophy from LaTrobe University's School of Law, in the topic of Digital Fidelity: how social media has impacted on Modern Orthodox Jews and their relationship with Jewish law and the rabbinic establishment.
